Course Design for Academic Year 2020/21

Our hybrid pivot is an emergency response to current circumstances, so we do not expect our courses to duplicate the resource-intensive approaches of the OU, TEDx, Khan Academy, etc. We want to prioritise staff welfare by finding the optimum level of adaptation under the circumstances we are in, and offering that consistently across courses of each type. At the same time, we want to maximise the benefits of the work that will be carried out, so are adopting an educational approach that is appropriate for return to fully on-campus learning. We know that a number of staff have already identified exciting new ways to enhance their courses that go beyond the guidance we are offering. Given the short timescales under which we are working, we are advising staff to adopt a consistent approach in each of the two categories.

ND2 - New Design, New Delivery

These courses will be offered to new entrants to Engineering - years 1 and 2 of the Undergraduate programme, and courses offered to MSc students. The overall process is:

  • Light-touch review of course details
  • Divide courses into topics
  • Plan activities and student timings to cover each topic
  • Write and record material to cover these

These courses will continue to be delivered in this format in future years. For further information, and links to resources, please see the ND2 detailed design process.

CD2 - Current Design, Customised Delivery

These courses will be offered to remaining courses that are taken by returning Engineering students - they will be in years 3 to 5 of the Undergraduate programme. The main element of the process is:

  • Light-touch review of course details
  • Write and record material to cover the material previously covered in lectures

These courses will be delivered in the new ND2 format in future years. For further information, and links to resources, please see the CD2 detailed design process.
