Making Blended Education Work
A FutureLearn course developed by the University's Centre for Research in Digital Education addressing blended teaching strategies at three levels: Course, Programme and Institution. It runs for 5 weeks starting from the week commencing the 11th of May. It takes approximately 2 hours per week to complete.
The Edinburgh Model for Teaching Online training programme
The University's flagship programme for teaching online. It builds on online teaching programmes already developed within the University with extensive use of Learn, blogs and other teaching technologies to create a broader teaching and learning space. It runs for 7 weeks from the 22nd of June, taking approximately 5 hours per week to complete.
Information Services are also running weekly remotely-run training sessions for effective remote teaching. The sessions cover a wide range of topics:
- Using Blackboard Collaborate in Learn (https://edin.ac/3eGGbJF)
- Using Learn to engage with students (https://edin.ac/2KGlbF8)
- Remote teaching (https://edin.ac/2A1TZOX)
- Using Media Hopper Create and Media Hopper Replay for remote teaching (https://edin.ac/35HGuQd)
The Institute for Academic Development (IAD) has recently resumed their Practical Strategies series of workshops (https://edin.ac/2Iauw8y). Workshops available at the moment are focused on three topics: (i) teaching in online environments, (ii) developing online assessment practices, and (iii) helping your students to learn. IAD continues to provide an excellent support to teaching and learning activities through their constructive and very helpful training (https://edin.ac/2zin9rE).
In addition to their courses, IAD continues to provide a wide variation of reflections and tips about learning and teaching through the University's Teaching Matters blog (https://edin.ac/2zjBTUY). There, you may find relevant topics covered in various series of interconnected themes, such as:
- Spotlight on Remote Teaching (https://edin.ac/2T5UCxA)
- Spotlight on Alternative Assessment (https://edin.ac/3cHTgRm)
- Spotlight on Practice Worth Sharing (https://edin.ac/2yUCKPt)
Recorded presentations and materials
- AdvanceHE has different recorded webinars and material to support UK universities during the transition to remote teaching. They have prepared additional resources to support higher education teaching during the Covid-19 pandemic (https://edin.ac/2SOPONb) that require registration, which is free for University staff.
- AdvanceHE also has a small section on blended learning (https://edin.ac/2SLF3Lj). The recommendation is to start exploring the University of Central Florida’s blended learning toolkit (https://edin.ac/3bcwKPi), which includes different suggestions and practical aspects (NOTE: some of the links in the toolkit are no longer available, it has not been updated for the last 4 years, and it mainly addresses on-campus and online, rather than on-campus or online).
- Mrs Virna Rossi, Educational Developer at Ravensbourne University in London, has recently created a series of short videos focused on online learning (https://edin.ac/35IBfQz) with plenty of suggestions/ideas that could be easily incorporated into all types of teaching delivery modes. She has also been running a series of 30-minute webinars with global experts on the topic (https://edin.ac/2WdYZc5).
